I am making this number public, as I want others to stop doing what I’m doing. It’s not possible for one person to keep the book industry alive, especially if that person (aka me) is unemployed. I have a library card in the local library now, and I hope this year will be better, both for my wallet and for my bookshelves. And I shall keep you posted on how that goes. - More poetry!
As my Polish Teacher used to say. Guilty as charged. Ever since I stopped studying literature professionally (as one would say) I’ve been most remiss in reading poetry. And yet poetry should be crucially important reading material for me. After all, it is the genre most interested in the wordiness of words. So I am going to try and introduce a poem of the week feature to this blog, in order to force myself to read more poetry. Stay tuned. - Read books in Polish, French and generally as many languages as possible.
Living in the UK as I am now and reading mostly English books, I run the risk of losing my Polish language bilingual fluency. So I am resolved to read more in Polish. And I will try to review those books on the blog, as I think spreading the word about good books in any language is a good idea. I shall try to read books in their original language as long as they are in English, Polish, German or French. The German and French will, of course, be a struggle, but it will hopefully be worth it! - Don’t get too wrapped up in this year’s must-read trends.
Sure, it’s great to read this year’s Man Booker Prize winner. But how many of those must-read books will I still want to read next year? I shall try to think more about what I buy and read. - Be more systematic about blog posting.
I’ve been remiss with writing reviews for some of the books I was reading by the end of the year. But I really like having reviews of books that I’ve read a few years back – they work really well as a reminder of what the book was about! So I shall try to be better, and perhaps even write up reviews for some of the books I failed to cover last year.

One of my bookish resolutions last year was to acquire fewer books and spend less money on books. I actually did fairly well at the latter. This year I think I’m going to try to focus on whittling down my TBR (not down to any number, just down and not up). So far this year I’ve finished one book, bought one book, and ordered three more. Not an auspicious start. I was going to say I’m not really worried about how much I spend, but I saw four very handsome leatherbound books at the store for $100+ that I am probably going to go back and buy…

Looking forward to hearing what your resolutions are 🙂 Leatherbound books are pretty special, so it’s a good excuse! I’ve bought one e-book so far this year… so not the best of starts… in my defence, it was on sale…

Yes! I second this – libraries are fantastic, and keeping borrower numbers up helps them to argue for their continued funding. Not to mention that I find it far easier to put down a bad book if I haven’t paid for it myself! I like what you’ve said about the pressure to keep up with the latest books too.

That’s so true 🙂 I also think it’s useful to have a due date on a library book- it sometimes forces me to actually sit down and read a book that I would otherwise procrastinate!

I hadn’t thought about that, but you’re so right. Visiting the library to borrow or return books is also a lovely thing, a chance to be in a book-lovers’ space which isn’t commercial, and potentially a chance to meet other local readers.
