Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. You can find a list of topics for each week at That Artsy Reader Gir if you’d like to join in!
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme is: Books That Have Been On My TBR the Longest and I Still Haven’t Read
My TBR used to be a single shelf on a bookshelf. I don’t think it would quite fit there anymore… These books need to be read! Soon!
- Homer The Odyssey
I got my copy when I was eight and a huge huge fan of Odysseus and Athena. Needless to say, didn’t manage to read it then… and I still haven’t
2.David Lodge Nice Work
When I was sixteen I won a competition – and they gave me some money to spend on books. This is one of the books I picked up then. I still haven’t read it. And now that I was looking it up, it turns out it’s volume three in a series. Help.
3. Toni Morison Tar Baby
Remember the bundle of books that I bought when I was sixteen? Yeah, this is one of those. I loved Beloved so much that I decided to pick this one up. But I haven’t got round to it yet.
4. Simone de Beauvoir The Mandarins
This was a birthday present I picked for myself when I was teens. I tried starting it several times now, and there’s always something that gets in the way.
5. Charlotte Brontë Villette
I actually took that book with me to my undergraduate university interview 7 years ago. Needless to say, I was too stressed out to read it then.
6. Mario Vargas Llosa Conversation in the Cathedral
Another birthday present I picked for myself and haven’t gotten round to reading yet. It’s so huuuuge though.
7. Gustave Flaubert Madame Bovary
It’s short, it’s an absolute classic and it’s been on my to-read shelf for more than 5 years. I have no excuse.
Do you have any books that are staring at you from your TBR list?
I am quite sure I also have Vilette somewhere…unread of course 😀

Oh dear. This reminds me that I also have an unread copy of Villette!

The English teacher in me says you don’t need to read The Odyssey in its entirety. You can read the major sections and get the gist of the story. I think I read the entire thing in 9th grade, and when I taught 9th grade, I was like, “nope.”

Hmmm… do you think that counts?

Yup. I think about it like I think about Moby Dick. As long as I know enough to get the allusions to it, I’m in good shape.
